High-Speed Collision on I-75 Leaves Three Injured in Hillsborough County
John Della Costa

In Hillsborough County, FL, a high-speed crash on Interstate 75 resulted in serious injuries for three young men. This incident, occurring on September 6, 2025, near mile marker 268 in the southbound lanes, underscores the dangers of reckless driving.

Details of the Crash

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that a 25-year-old Tampa man drove a Dodge Charger at approximately 100 mph. The vehicle's bald tires, combined with the wet road conditions, were critical safety risks. The driver lost control, causing the car to crash off the highway, hitting an embankment, going airborne, and colliding with trees. The crash left the vehicle severely damaged, although it involved no other cars.

Serious Injuries in a Single-Vehicle Crash

In addition to the driver, the passengers—a 24-year-old Riverview man and a 25-year-old from Land O’ Lakes—suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized. All injuries are severe but currently, no fatalities have been reported.

The FHP continues to investigate, looking into potential factors like distraction or impairment.

Preventative Measures and Tire Safety

This tragic event highlights the critical importance of tire safety and speed management. Bald tires greatly reduce traction, especially on wet roads, significantly increasing the risk of losing control. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Tire-related incidents account for over 11,000 crashes annually.
  • Speeding contributes to nearly one-third of all fatal traffic accidents.

In this case, poor vehicle maintenance and excessive speed jeopardized lives.

Safety Considerations for Drivers

This incident serves as an urgent reminder for all drivers:

  • Regularly check tire tread and condition—bald tires are illegal and dangerous.
  • Always reduce speed in adverse weather.
  • Be cautious around curves and embankments at high speeds.
  • Drive responsibly, especially with passengers, as their safety is also your responsibility.

Our Condolences

Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and their families during this difficult time. We hope for their recovery and encourage a reevaluation of driving habits to prevent similar incidents. Speed and maintenance negligence are not just dangerous—they can be life-threatening.
